President

Elie Araj is President of Applied Sciences Consulting Inc., a civil and environmental engineering firm serving public agencies and select private clients throughout Florida. His expertise in stormwater management, environmental sciences and regulatory permitting stems from more than two decades of experience and award-winning work in local government and the private sector. He combines that knowledge with a passion for advancing sustainable development and green engineering.

Prior to founding the company, Mr. Araj served for five years as Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Berryman & Henigar, Inc. - a national consulting firm with five Florida offices. The firm's regional operations included water resources engineering, civil engineering, utilities engineering, roadway design, environmental sciences, land surveying and regulatory support.

Mr. Araj also served for nearly a decade as Environmental Team Manager in the stormwater management section of Hillsborough County's engineering department. For his distinguished career with one of Florida's largest counties, he was honored in 1999 with Hillsborough County's Excellence in Government Award, selected from a pool of 2,800 employees in community services. In 1998, he received a Coastal America Partnership Award as part of a team spearheading the restoration of Cockroach Bay. The National Association of Counties also honored Mr. Araj with its 1993 Achievement Award in recognition of Hillsborough County's NPDES program.

During his county tenure, Mr. Araj was responsible for coordinating the in-house development and submittal of Hillsborough County's Phase 1 NPDES permit (Parts 1 and 2) to EPA. Additionally, he oversaw development of the county's watershed management plans, including analysis and recommendations for flood control, water quality and habitat restoration. Under his guidance, the county designed, permitted and constructed numerous habitat restoration and water quality projects.

Mr. Araj was instrumental in establishing the county's lake management program, including water quality testing, watershed best management practices and public education. The program included the first internet-based county watershed atlas, providing residents and scientists with vital water resource information (online at http://www.hillsborough.wateratlas.usf.edu).

Mr. Araj holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in water resources and environmental engineering from the University of South Florida. He is one of fewer than 300 engineers nationwide to have earned accreditation as a Diplomate - Water Resources Engineer from the American Society of Civil Engineers. The certification recognizes technical expertise, strong professional ethics and a commitment to life-long learning and professional development. Click here for a list of representative projects.
